You want it to feel happy and comfortable with you. The best way to do this is to keep it in your party, let it participate in battles, and ensure it doesn't faint too often. Winning battles naturally increases its affection, and if you're eager to speed things up, using EXP Candies can give that friendship meter a nice boost.
