01 Introduction to Excel Basics 2024/1/29 Excel Interface Overview: The title bar displays the name of the currently active workbook. The ribbon contains various tabs such as 'Home', 'Insert', 'Page Layout', etc., for performing different operations. The Name Box shows the name of the currently selected cell or range. The Edit Bar is used for entering or editing data or formulas in cells. The worksheet area displays sheets within the workbook, allowing data entry and editing. The Status Bar provides information about the selected area, such as average, count, etc.
Workbook, Worksheet, and Cell:
- Workbook: An Excel file that can contain one or more worksheets.
- Worksheet: A single table within a workbook made up of rows and columns.
- Cell: A single data point in a worksheet identified by column letters and row numbers. A range consists of multiple cells arranged in a rectangular area that can be selected by dragging with the mouse or entering an address.
Data Entry and Editing: Input data directly into cells by pressing Enter to confirm. Edit data by double-clicking on a cell or pressing F2 to enter edit mode; press Enter after making changes to confirm. Bulk input allows selecting multiple cells; after entering data, press Ctrl+Enter to fill all selected cells with the same value. Fill adjacent cells quickly using Fill Handle (the small square at the bottom right corner of a selection). Formatting Worksheets: Adjust column width and row height; set font styles and colors by dragging between column headers or row numbers. Select cells/ranges then use options from 'Font' & 'Color' on the ribbon for styling text attributes like font type, size, color. Add borders/backgrounds through options available under ‘Borders’ & ‘Fill Color’. Align text using alignment options like center-aligning left/right aligning from formatting tools on ribbon.
